While
the Porridge Wars involved every clan of the Dwarf Kingdoms, and in fact
most of the known civilized races of the world, the two main protagonists
were always King Pozst of the Iron Dwarves, and King Kel-Og of the Granite
Dwarves. It was these two who had declared war in the first place,
and they were involved to some extent in every action of the long and bloody
conflict.
Castle Peaz was obviously a tough nut to crack.
Its thick stone walls were made with the finest Dwarf craftsmanship, and
the ramparts were filled with cannon and tough Iron Dwarf warriors.
Taking this castle would be no easy feat, however, Kel-Og had a wild card
up his sleeve.
For several years, Granite Dwarf artificers had been
working on a new sea-going vessel. It would be made of wood
as a conventional ship, but it would be covered in plates of iron armor.
Furthermore, the craft would be fully enclosed to protect the crew.
Because the craft was so heavy, it would only be able to sport one, or
perhaps two cannon at best, but to overcome this lack of armament, they
would be placed in revolving turrets, capable of firing a full 360º
around the ship. The craft was dubbed an Ironclad, and two designs
were developed in time for the raid on the Isle of Peaz: A light,
single turreted ship, and a larger two turreted one.
Besides
his Granite Dwarf forces, King Kel-Og had enlisted the aid of some Pygmy
mercenaries. Normally, these would be scoffed at by the Dwarves (who
are well known to be contemptible of anything shorter than themselves),
but these Pygmies were small enough to man a proto-type flying machine
which the Dwarves had built, but were too heavy to operate. It was
hoped that this flying machine would be able to rain rocks and grenades
down into compound of Castle Peaz.
<< The Pygmy-manned flying contraption...
When King Kel-Og heard that his nemesis, King Pozst,
would be conducting a tour of Castle Peaz, he decided to lead his fleet
into battle personally. Taking command of the large ironclad, Delectable,
the fleet set off in a cloud smoke that could be seen for miles away.
And that is why King Pozst had plenty of advance notice
of the Granite Dwarves' arrival, and so was able to prepare a surprise
for them...
