Three
squads of UDP Heavy Infantry have all been assigned to the front line in
anticipation of a major assault by the forces of the Robber Baron Griegus,
who is currently attempting to take over this mining colony in a bid for
local power. This is a common occurrence in the world of Omega Warrior
as minor powers attempt to steal planets and resources whenever possible.
The major powers, the UDP and RSSP, spend a great deal of money in defending
their possessions from attacks such as these.
The three squads are all armed with Blaster Rifles, Stun and Blast Grenades. Each squad of six troopers also has two heavy weapons. There are mix of Missile Launchers, Heavy Rifles, AutoBlasters, and Napalm Launchers.
The troopers were quietly manning their posts, expecting some type of infantry or perhaps armored vehicle assault. . .
Surprise!
Baron Griegus has hired a mercenary band of Omega Warriors to do his dirty
work! These mercenary bands are relatively rare, considering the
cost of an Omega Suit, but they do exist, and like any other mercenary,
they sell their services to the highest bidder.
As soon as they are spotted, the UDP infantry begins to fire. Fortunately for them, the Omega Warriors are equipped with short range weapons. If the infantry can hold them off with long range fire, perhaps they can save the day, or at least retreat to safety. Knowing their very lives hang in the balance, they pour on the fire, as blaster, missile, and napalm fire all join together in a desperate attempt to hold off the enemy.
In
spite of their best efforts, the Omega Warriors are soon on top of them!
As soon as they are in range of their weapons, the Warriors open fire,
and the ground around the entrenched infantry erupts in a burst of earth
and fire.
It is no longer a question of holding their position. It is now a question of survival. What begins as a fighting withdrawal quickly turns into a route and the infantry commanders find themselves no longer in control of their men.
In
mere seconds, it is over. Using low power, but rapid firing weaponry,
along with weapons with large areas of effect, the Omega Warriors quickly
finish off each and every one of the UDP Heavy Infantry.
There are no survivors.
Conclusion
The UDP Infantry tried valiantly to hold off the Baron's mercenaries, but to no avail. Never expecting such firepower, the UDP had not sent any Omega Warriors to the colony for its defense, and so the Baron was able to quickly take over.
The UDP is currently putting together an punitive expeditionary
force with two purposes: First, to take back the colony, and Second,
to put an end to Baron Griegus!
We used figures from Ground Zero Games for this battle. They are from their excellent Stargrunt line. The figures are truly 25mm in scale, and there is a wide variety to choose from. I can highly recommend them for sci-fi miniature wargaming.
And yes, the infantry never really stood a chance. The battle was never meant to be fair, but instead was an example of the kind of power difference that exists between infantry (even a lot of them) versus the Omega Suit. The 18 Heavy Infantry might have had a chance against a single Omega Warrior, and if played well could have even caused him to retreat, but for the four Omega Warriors they ended up fighting, it was little more than a stroll through the park.
The battlefield was made by Flagship Games partner, Thomas Foss. He took several sheets of foam board (2" thick), and applied spray paint, gasoline and acetone to get different scarring effects on the landscape. The whole thing was then painted and dry brushed with with different earth tones for a very realistic, moon-like effect.
